IC443
IC443 is the remnant of a star that exploded more than 1,000 years ago. The expanding bubble of gas now continues to plow through the interstellar medium (ISM, latent clouds of gas in our galaxy) and glow due to the interaction. Notice the very fine filaments of gas on the left side of the image. This form of star death is one of two methods known that "seed" the galaxy with heavy elements (to later form planets and humans perhaps).
